HOUSE SMUDGING
Smudging is a way to energetically cleanse a space to invite positive energy
When smudging a space, we burn plant material (but there are smoke-free alternatives) and as the smoke fills the space it purifies it.
In feng shui, this is called a space blessing.
We use Palo Santo wood or Sage depending on the occasion and preference.
The most-used types of sage have antimicrobial properties. This means they keep infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi at bay.
A cost-effective way to help purify the air.
Afterwards you can concentrate on the wishes you want for your home and family.
When you clear your house, there’s a vacuum that’s created.
You want to welcome your intentions into the newly cleared and open space.
It’s especially important to perform a space clearing as part of the cleaning process when you first move into a new house, but we would recommend doing it once a month.
When we do it we will also clear away any unwanted negative energy that for whatever reason is stuck there or doesn’t want to freely leave and we call in protection, guidance and unconditional love for the whole household.
A 2016 research project for the University of Mississippi established that white sage (Salvia apiana) is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain.
Everyone should try it at least once and feel the difference, it’s just smoke. And it may just help you, a lot.
Bit of history and traditions
Burning aromatic herbs and resins was practiced in antiquity and is found in many cultures and spiritual religions.
Sage has a long history of use in Egyptian, Roman, and Greek medicine, as well as in Native American healing traditions. Dried sage is burned to heal, protect, increase wisdom, and boost defense against disease.
Smudging, though, is primarily associated with Indigenous traditions in the United States.
In Feng Shui another way to clear the energy/qi of the house is to open all the doors and windows to the outside for a minimum of nine minutes between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also using a sweet orange, palo santo or sage mist works for daily cleansings.
This will improve the flow of qi/life force energy in the house.
IMPORTANT: Setting off smoke alarms is common, make sure they’re off when we come or request a smoke-free cleansing.
